PHNOM PENH: Cambodia — The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has confirmed that Cambodia has not sent any workers to work in Thailand since the outbreak of the recent border conflict, citing strong domestic demand for labour.

Speaking on March 12, ministry spokesperson Sun Mesa said Cambodia currently has sufficient employment opportunities across multiple sectors and therefore has no reason to send workers abroad to Thailand.

“The economic situation in Cambodia has not changed significantly, and the demand for labour within the country remains high,” Sun Mesa said.

He explained that sectors including industry, agriculture, agro-industry, services, and tourism are experiencing strong labour demand to support production chains in companies, factories, and enterprises nationwide.

According to the spokesperson, the need for workers comes at a time when Cambodia is also welcoming many skilled labourers returning from Thailand.

“Since the border war, we have never sent our labour to Thailand, and we also do not have a new policy for sending our labourers to work in Thailand,” Sun Mesa said. “On behalf of the Ministry of Labour, I continue to call on Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand to return and work in our country, where they can benefit more than working abroad.”

The ministry also emphasized that it has been implementing in-depth reforms in technical and vocational education and training to strengthen Cambodia’s workforce.

Sun Mesa noted that the government is enhancing partnerships between the public and private sectors to develop human resources with stronger knowledge, skills, work attitudes, and professional ethics to improve competitiveness and support lifelong employment.

These efforts, he said, are intended to strengthen Cambodia’s skills development system and better meet the demands of the domestic labour market while contributing to the country’s long-term economic development.
