Phnom Penh: Former Khmer workers who returned from Thailand said that they gained skills, finished training with jobs, and received money as well as some other benefits during the 7-day sewing skills training course.

Ms. Chan Sophy, a former worker who got a job at T.S. Spot (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. in Kampong Speu province, said she was really happy to join this sewing skills training because she could work locally with a reasonable salary without having to migrate again.

She explained: “While working in Thailand, I often faced problems such as some supervisors not paying wages and concerns about personal safety. I also missed home because I worked far away. But now, I have sewing skills, a reasonable salary, and I live near home without worrying about safety anymore.”

For Ms. Ou Sreyloun, a former worker from Siem Reap province currently working in a factory in Kampong Speu province, she said that while staying in Thailand, she and her husband worked as glass delivery workers for commercial buildings, condos, and villas in Bangkok without sewing skills.

She continued: “When I returned to Cambodia, I received great care and was allowed to learn sewing for free and even got paid. Now, I have sewing skills, a salary, and a job in our local area. So, I no longer worry much. My husband and I work hard to save money for our family’s livelihood.”

This former worker appealed to those looking for jobs or sewing skills training to contact the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training because there are many local jobs available, so there is no need to migrate far away.

Mr. Sun Mesa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, said the 7-day sewing skills training course aims to provide sewing skills to youth, especially former Khmer workers who returned from Thailand and want to work in the sewing sector but lack experience.

He added: “During this course, all trainees can gain skills, finish training with immediate jobs, receive money, and some other benefits to encourage and ease difficulties during the training period.”

Please be informed that this sewing skills training course is organized under the cooperation of NEA of the Ministry of Labor in partnership with sewing factories in Kampong Speu and Kandal provinces, supported by the Skills Development Fund (SDF).
