Founder of prominent humanitarian foundation claims war in Iran would cause global hunger crisis

Foreign Affairs: According to RT, the founder of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) Foundation, Jose Andres, has warned that disruptions in fertilizer supplies caused by the US and Israel’s war on Iran risk triggering a multi-year food crisis worldwide.

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have already pushed up energy prices and disrupted the global economy by disrupting one of the world’s most important trade arteries.

The waterway handles about 20 percent of global crude oil exports, but it is also crucial for agricultural fertilizer exports.

Speaking to The Guardian on Thursday, Andres said delays in fertilizer deliveries risked the loss of vital crop production. This has reduced yields in subsequent harvests and triggered a chain reaction of lower yields and higher food prices.

The conflict has also led to the closure of fertilizer plants across the Gulf, further straining supplies. Nitrogen fertilizers account for the largest share of global consumption and support about half of the world’s food production. With the Gulf serving as a major export hub, disruptions to shipping lanes have exacerbated shortages during the growing season.
