Foreign Affairs: The Cuban government attempted to open direct communication with US President Donald Trump last week by luring a private businessman to deliver a secret letter to the White House, according to RT, citing sources, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
The reported message, which was eventually seen, suggests that Cuba wants to bypass US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has long sought to implement a regime change policy on the island.
The report said the change was orchestrated by Raul Rodriguez Castro, the grandson and aide of former Cuban President Raul Castro, 94, who is considered the island’s most powerful figure. It added that the letter bore the official seal of the Cuban government and was formatted as a diplomatic note.
The letter proposed economic and investment agreements, along with sanctions relief, and warned that Havana was preparing for a possible U.S. military invasion, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed U.S. officials.
The bearer of the secret letter, Roberto Carlos Chamizo Gonzalez, 37, a high-end travel and luxury car rental entrepreneur based in Havana, was stopped by security officers at Miami International Airport, who confiscated the letter and sent him back to Cuba.
