Phnom Penh: Cambodia welcomes the release of detainees under the decree issued by the President of Myanmar on April 17, 2026, pardoning more than 4,000 individuals, including former President U Win Myint, and the commutation of the sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi on the occasion of the Myanmar New Year.

According to a statement by the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 22, this is a positive and important development that is in line with ASEAN’s expectations and helps create a more conducive environment for dialogue and national reconciliation.

Cambodia looks forward to seeing further positive steps that can build trust and advance the cause of peace. Cambodia is optimistic about the positive developments in Myanmar and strongly hopes that all parties can work together towards a nationwide ceasefire and national reconciliation.

In this regard, Cambodia is committed to working together with all ASEAN member states, based on the ASEAN Charter and the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) Agreement, to help Myanmar return to normality through a political process that is inclusive, Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned.
