Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment has indicated that regular water quality monitoring along the Mekong River remained at a “good” level during the first quarter of 2026.

The Ministry of Environment conducts monthly water quality assessments at monitoring sites Monitoring of 11 sites by implementing cooperation with provincial and capital environmental departments along the Mekong River, including Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Phnom Penh and Prey Veng provinces.
The assessment focused on 12 key parameters used to assess water quality for public health protection, including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg).

According to the results from January to March 2026, the Mekong River water quality was consistently recorded at the “good” level at all 11 target locations monitored. The findings show that the Mekong River water quality remains in compliance with national standards for surface water quality.
The Ministry of Environment said that regular monitoring plays a key role in ensuring early detection of potential pollution and supporting water resources management based on scientific evidence.

Detailed data and technical explanations have been compiled for future reference. At the same time, the Ministry of Environment would like to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining water quality through continuous monitoring and inspection of the Mekong River water quality and strengthening cooperation with relevant institutions.
