Phnom Penh: Cambodia and Laos have expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of science, technology and innovation and the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME). This was according to a courtesy call between Mr. Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Mr. Sonexay Vannaxay, the newly appointed Ambassador of Laos to Cambodia, on July 6, 2026.
The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in the fields of science, technology and innovation, research, national quality infrastructure and human resource development, as well as strengthening regional connectivity.
The Ambassador highlighted the potential of the Lao-China high-speed railway and improved cross-border transport links, which can help facilitate trade, reduce the transport time of agricultural products, and promote tourism, as well as people-to-people connections between Cambodia, Laos and China.
Mr. Hem Vandy welcomed and congratulated His Excellency Sonexay Vannaxay on his appointment. The Minister said, “For countries with small economies, science, technology and innovation are not an option but a necessity. Through closer collaboration, knowledge sharing and strengthening the research, standardisation and innovation ecosystem, Cambodia and Laos can support the development of micro, small and medium enterprises, increase competitiveness and create new opportunities for our people.”
Mr. Vannaxay reiterated his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during his term of office, saying, “I will work hard to be a bridge and strengthen relations between the two countries. “Through close cooperation, we can bring the benefits of scientific and technological progress to the people of both countries.”
The two sides also agreed to promote exchanges of researchers and experts, promote joint training and knowledge sharing, and strengthen cooperation under the ASEAN framework and relevant regional mechanisms.
