Phnom Penh: For some people, working from 8am to 5pm may be a normal way of life, but for Mr. Yus Savuth, working as a security guard at night and continuing to learn skills with a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program during the day is the only option to change his family’s livelihood.
Before becoming a business owner, Mr. Savuth had left his hometown to work as a migrant worker abroad, hoping to earn money to support his family, but life did not go as expected. After returning to his homeland, his first job was as a security guard at an institution, earning only $180 a month.
He recalled that difficult past: “How much salary “I can’t support my family. Sometimes, I don’t even have enough money to buy milk for my children. If I keep working 8 hours a day like this, my family’s life will never get better.”
The hardships in life prompted Mr. Savuth to start looking for a technical skill to put into practice. One day, a co-worker suggested that he learn air-conditioning repair skills through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training.
He said: “I haven’t started studying right away. I rode my motorbike to see if there were many people using it. After seeing it and believing that this skill had a future, I decided to enroll at the Cambodian Institute of Professional Development.”
The decision to learn air conditioning skills was a turning point in his life. At night, he worked as a security guard, while during the day, he went to study, never leaving any free time. He still remembers that one day, while traveling to school, he fell off his motorbike on the road, but he did not return home and continued to study.
He said, “Sometimes I almost gave up. “But I think only knowledge and skills can change my life and that of my family.”
While studying, he gradually started to have customers. After graduation, he continued to work as a repairman and maintenance worker for portable air conditioners and continued to work as a security guard part-time to earn extra money. When his job became more stable and he could earn more than before, he decided to quit his security job and open his own air conditioner repair and maintenance business.
Today, he is the owner of an air conditioner repair and maintenance business. Which can earn an average income of about $2,000 per month, but this success did not happen by chance. It comes from sweat, sacrifice, and perseverance in not giving up on dreams.
