Phnom Penh: On March 27, 2026, Cambodia took another important step in strengthening the innovation ecosystem through the launch of the national research fund mechanism.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the technical workshop on the national and regional funding mechanism for research and development, Minister Hem Vanndy, Chairman of the National Research Fund Management Board, stated, “The establishment of the national research fund as an administrative body is a historic milestone in strengthening the foundation of Cambodia’s innovation ecosystem. This progress demonstrates the Royal Government’s commitment to supporting research and development with integrity, sustainability, and efficiency.”

This workshop is an event accompanying the 2026 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Day, gathering regional experts to share experiences on research funding mechanisms and national research system management.
The Minister emphasized that ASEAN member countries are focusing on investing in research and development to create new knowledge and add value to their products and services.
He also highlighted key challenges, including the lack of investment in research and development and the necessity to align research activities with national priorities. Meanwhile, research capacity in both the public and private sectors, research infrastructure, and the linkage between research institutions and enterprises remain weak.
Dr. Eng Netra, Executive Director of the Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI), mentioned that CDRI has received a three-year funding grant from the Government of Canada to provide technical support to the national research fund, aiming to strengthen the capacity of researchers and research institutions, enhance the ability to secure funding and utilize research funds, and promote evidence-based policy formulation in Cambodia.
