Phnom Penh: Sralau Island, located in Sralau Village, Koh Kapi Commune, Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province, will become a model carbon neutral island in Cambodia and the region.

The project to develop Sralau Island as a Carbon Neutral Island, home to more than 300 households, was announced by Dr. Eng Sophalet, Minister of Environment, during a meeting with local authorities and residents of Koh Kong Province and the celebration of the “Peace Crab Festival” on March 26, 2026, held directly on Sralau Island.

Dr. Eng Sophalet stated that the preparation of the island as a carbon neutral zone focuses on three main strategies: organizing infrastructure and promoting participation in activities by stakeholders, especially local residents, to enhance environmental conservation and promote sustainable green development in Cambodia’s coastal areas.

The Minister added that to transform the beautiful and potential Sralau Island into a sustainably developed carbon neutral island in the future, the Ministry of Environment will prepare key action plans such as: 1. Reforestation of mangrove forests and lost tropical forests; 2. Developing climate-resilient infrastructure; 3. Development using green technology, including solar-powered transportation and renewable energy; 4. Solid waste management through proper segregation and disposal without burning waste without technical guidance from specialized institutions; 5. Organizing environmentally friendly infrastructure and eco-tourism products to attract visitors; and 6. Smart agriculture, among others.

It should be noted that during the “Announcement Ceremony for the Development of the Sralau Nature Protection Community as a Carbon Neutral Community and the Peace Crab Festival,” Dr. Minister presented gifts from Samdech Maha Bavarothipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Mrs. Dr. Pich Chanmuni Hun Manet to residents in the Sralau Nature Protection Community.
