Kampot: Deputy Prime Minister Say Samal, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction and Head of the Government Working Group in Kampot Province, stated that developing fishing communities into tourist destinations aims to improve the living standards of the local people in accordance with the policies issued by the Royal Government.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of coastal community infrastructure projects, which include the fishing communities of Prek Tnoat, Trapang Ropov, Trapang Sangkae, Kampong Samaki in Kampot Province, and the fishing community of Okrosar in Kep Province on March 29, 2026, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that alongside development, the current Head of Government, Samdech Techo Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, continuously considers the welfare and needs of the people. He especially encourages government working groups at all provincial and municipal levels to transform and develop their local areas to be attractive, so that the people can benefit from these areas and improve their living standards.

Deputy Prime Minister Say Samal further stated that the development of fishing communities into tourist destinations has several objectives: to provide fishermen with more livelihood options, regular income, savings, reduce family debts, have decent housing, sufficient food, and especially the ability to send their children to school.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that after the completion of the coastal community infrastructure, fishermen will benefit from the tourism sector in line with the policies issued by the Royal Government, based on Cambodia’s vision for 2030 and 2050 to transform Cambodia into an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.
According to Mr. Mao Thonin, Governor of Kampot Province, the establishment of these fishing communities is the Royal Government’s intention to transfer power to the people living in the area to participate in managing aquatic resources sustainably at the local level. It aims to ensure that the people clearly understand and consider themselves as the rightful owners of these resources to fairly benefit from them.
