Foreign Affairs: Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said he is “not afraid” of President Donald Trump and his threat to “conquer” Cuba.
According to POLITICO, published on April 13, 2026, in an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker that aired Sunday, Díaz-Canel said his country is ready to fight against U.S. aggression and that he is personally willing to die for the cause.
“I am not afraid,” Díaz-Canel said on “Meet the Press” through an interpreter. “I am willing to sacrifice my life for the revolution.” He stressed that Cuba does not want war, adding that he did not believe the “vulnerable” American people would support an invasion of a small island just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. But if war breaks out, he said, there would be “very high costs for everyone involved.” Referring to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States earlier this year, Díaz-Canel said, “If the time comes, I don’t think there would be any reason for the United States to launch a military invasion against Cuba or for the United States to carry out an operation or arrest the president.”
