Foreign Affairs: According to RT, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has called on the EU to resume oil and gas imports from Russia, arguing that the bloc should prioritize energy security.
War in the Middle East has exacerbated Europe’s energy crisis, while disruptions to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for controlling about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, have pushed oil prices up by 70 percent since February.
Speaking at the ‘Patriots for Europe’ rally in Milan on Saturday, Salvini, leader of Italy’s Lega party, claimed that the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) and the “so-called Green Deal ideology” were holding back the bloc’s economy. He called for the bloc to reinstate a ban on Russian energy imports.
He told supporters that to solve the energy crisis, the Stability Pact rules must be suspended and Italian money must be used to help struggling Italians, urging Brussels to follow the United States and immediately lift sanctions that are blocking trade and purchases of Russian oil.
