Foreign Affairs: Xinhua News Agency reported today that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that Canada’s past strength based on close ties with the United States has become a weakness that requires correction through global trade diversification.
In a video speech titled “Guidelines for the Future” posted on his social media, Carney gave an assessment of the current Canada-U.S. relationship.
Carney said the United States has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression, citing the current heavy duties that are affecting Canada’s auto, steel and lumber industries.
Since early 2025, the United States has maintained a series of sanctions on Canadian exports, including 25 percent on various goods and 50 percent on steel and aluminum. These measures have severely disrupted North American supply chains and put pressure on Ottawa to find new economic frontiers to replace the current market.
