Strong earthquake in Japan triggers tsunami warning for Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido

Foreign: A tsunami warning with a threat of a tsunami of up to 3 meters was issued on Monday for Iwate Prefecture and Hokkaido in northern Japan after an earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate.

According to The Japan Times published on April 20, 2026, hosts on several television news programs urged local residents to move to higher ground, away from rivers and beaches, calling on people to “remember the March 11 disaster.”

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake, which struck at a depth of 10 kilometers at 4:53 p.m., had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4. The quake was felt as far away as Tokyo, where buildings shook for several minutes.
