Phnom Penh: Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra said that landmines left over from the war have killed and injured more than 60,000 Cambodians, while the number of victims has decreased.

After attending the plenary meeting of the Council of Ministers on the morning of April 23, 2026, chaired by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, to review and decide on a number of important agenda items, including the draft National Policy on Mine Action 2026-2035, Mr. Neth Pheaktra said that from 1979 to the present, mines and explosive remnants of war have caused the deaths, disabilities, and injuries of 65,125 Cambodians. At the same time, the number of annual casualties decreased from 4,320 in 1996 to 39 in 2025.

He said that from 1992 to 2025, Cambodia found and destroyed 1,207,133 anti-personnel mines, 26,700 anti-tank mines, and 3,244,178 explosive remnants of war.

Please note that over the past 33 years, from 1992 to 2025, an area of 3,541 square kilometers has been cleared of mines for use and cultivation. Of this, 78 percent is in the agricultural sector, 5 percent in infrastructure, and 17 percent in other sectors, including the construction of housing, farms, schools, health centers, etc. As a result of these mine clearance efforts, Cambodia has become a leading country and plays a significant role in global mine action.
