Professor Chheang Ra meets with the Director-General of the World Health Organization, focusing on the health sector

Phnom Penh: Professor Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, met with Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, Director of the World Health Organization for the Western Pacific Region, on the afternoon of May 19, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland.

During this meeting, the Minister briefed the WHO Western Pacific Region on the continued strong efforts of Cambodian health to participate in protecting the health and well-being of the Cambodian people and the people of the region, as well as the health of people around the world, whose contribution and commitment to achieving the global goals of health achievements of each member country is indispensable.

Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala highlighted Cambodia’s example of commitment and achievement of key goals on the global health agenda, such as efforts on the right track of implementing primary health policies and successes in various infectious diseases, including moving closer to eliminating malaria, which kills millions of people. More specifically, it is Cambodia’s model of “One Health” leadership that His Excellency Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, personally invited to the One Health Summit in Lyon, France, in April.

Take advantage of that special meeting The Minister also presented the Cambodian Health Proposal, which calls for continued and enhanced support for Cambodia’s efforts in the “One Health” agenda and implementation, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) linked to climate change, community-based cancer prevention action plans, digital health including assistive technology in medicine, and enhanced capacity building on the management, analysis, and use of health data, focusing on the prevention and control of infectious disease outbreaks.
