Donald Trump claims the United States will reimpose sanctions on Russian oil

Foreign Affairs: US President Donald Trump said at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France, where efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine were high on the agenda, that the United States would reimpose sanctions on Russian oil.

Speaking to reporters in Evian, a town on the shores of Lake Geneva in eastern France, Trump said restrictions on Russian oil shipments could return after the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, allowing more oil to flow through. He was quoted as saying, citing the peace deal reached with Iran over the weekend, that “we are in a position to do that very soon.” In March, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a 30-day waiver allowing countries to buy Russian crude and petroleum products that were already loaded on ships and stranded at sea. The waiver was later extended as tensions involving Iran and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz continued to pressure oil markets. During the G7 summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about ending the conflict and defense cooperation. After his talks with Trump, Zelensky told reporters that it was “very important” that the next round of U.S.-Russia talks should take place before the winter, and the location and format of the talks would be decided by Trump.
