TEHRAN: A senior Iranian diplomat has warned that the Strait of Hormuz is not a “theater” for military displays by regional powers.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi wrote on the social media platform X that “Iran, as the responsible authority and guarantor of security in the Strait, warns against any military movement in this sensitive waterway.”
He added that “the security of the Strait is the sole responsibility of Iran and Oman,” rejecting a joint statement on Friday by outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
In their statement, Mr Starmer and Mr Macron described the waterway as a “vital artery” for the global economy, adding that “restoring safe passage for ships of all nations through the strait is a matter of global concern.”
The two leaders said Oman had agreed to work with the UK and France to ensure “its sovereign waters are safe for navigation,” stressing that the UK and France were also ready to deploy a large multinational military mission to support freedom of navigation in the strait.
