Phnom Penh: Ms. Sovann Vannarath, Permanent Secretary of State, High Representative of Mr. Heng Sour, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, chaired a meeting on “Tobacco Products and Electronic Devices and Chemicals for Smoking” recently at the Ministry’s office.
The meeting was organized by the Academic Health Expert Committee of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training under the framework of implementing the National Action Plan on Academic Health of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Academic Health, with the participation of the leadership of the Ministry, members of the Academic Health Expert Committee of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, representatives of the Cambodian Health Movement, representatives of the World Health Organization, and representatives of relevant organizations under the Ministry with the aim of raising awareness about the effects of tobacco products and electronic devices and chemicals for smoking and discussing preventive measures to curb the use of these products, aiming to improve the well-being of trainees, students, and alumni at TVET institutions and workers in enterprises, companies, factories, and civil servants under all ministries.
Ms. Sovann Vannarath said that human capital development is an important pillar of the Pentagon Strategy Phase 1, focusing on promoting education, vocational skills and public health. The Ministry has continued to implement measures to promote the well-being of students, trainees, TVET institutions and workers in enterprises, companies and factories through the National Policy on Academic Health and various guidelines and ongoing dissemination. Meanwhile, the Ministry has collaborated with the Ministry of Health to promote prevention of the use of tobacco products and electronic devices and chemicals for smoking, alcohol, drugs and non-communicable diseases, and to encourage workers and employees to practice healthy lifestyles to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.
At the meeting, experts from the Cambodian Health Movement and the World Health Organization (WHO) presented on the effects of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, chemicals for smoking, and the content of the Tobacco Control Convention, highlighting manufacturers’ strategies and Cambodia’s obligations. The meeting discussed preventive measures and agreed to continue strengthening publicity, prevention and collaboration with relevant partners, as well as expand health education activities at TIVET institutions to encourage young people to stay away from all types of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes and promote public health.
At the same time, Ms. Sovann Vannarath instructed and encouraged representatives of units under the ministry to continue to strengthen publicity, raise awareness about the effects of use, and increase monitoring and implementation of measures to prohibit the use of tobacco products and electronic devices and chemicals for smoking in all units under the ministry, TVET institutions, and enterprises, companies, and factories, aiming to participate in protecting public health, which is an important basis for the country’s development.
