Phnom Penh: Cambodia is increasing cooperation with friendly countries to join forces globally in eradicating online fraud because Cambodia cannot fight it alone.
This was stated by Mr. Vongsy Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Charge of the Council of Ministers, on the occasion of receiving Mr. Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, to pay a courtesy call and bid farewell on July 7, 2026.
During the meeting, Mr. Ueno Atsushi said that the Japanese side will continue to encourage Japanese investors to continue investing in Cambodia, even though some investors have raised the issue of online scams.
The Ambassador stated that “Japan is happy to cooperate with Cambodia on combating online scams and considers this issue to be a problem of all countries in the region, not just Cambodia’s problem.”
The Ambassador expressed support for Cambodia in using the international mechanism of UNCLOS and that Japan will continue to assist Cambodia in resolving border issues.
In response, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsi Vissoth emphasized that the Cambodia-Thailand border issue is structural and requires a patient and long-term solution. Cambodia remains committed to resolving all border disputes with Thailand peacefully in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements.
Regarding the issue of cybercrime, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that cybercrime is a transnational crime and Cambodia is one of the countries affected by cybercrime operations and transnational criminal networks.
The Royal Government of Cambodia is highly committed and has continuously implemented strict, rigorous and sharp measures to combat and eradicate this crime from Cambodia in order to enhance the country’s reputation and honor.
