Phnom Penh: With the support of the International Fund for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions of UNESCO and the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, the Ministry of Culture will implement the project “Strengthening the Cambodian Creative Economy Ecosystem: Developing a National Policy on Cultural and Creative Industries and Establishing a Pilot Support Center.”
According to a joint press release between the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and UNESCO, Cambodia’s cultural and creative industries are a key driving force in promoting economic growth, new innovations, job creation and social transformation.
The sector also plays an important role in preserving and protecting cultural heritage, promoting the display of Cambodian artistic works and creativity. However, the development of this sector still faces many challenges, such as lack of sector understanding, lack of data, and lack of working relationships between relevant partners.
The Cambodian Creative Economy Ecosystem Strengthening Project aims to positively impact the development of Cambodia’s cultural and creative industries through two main activities: data-based policymaking, institutional capacity building, and support for experts and creators in the sector.
The project will support the development of a national policy on Cambodia’s cultural and creative industries through comparative studies of regional and international models of cultural and creative industry management, mapping of cultural and creative resources, businesses, and related infrastructure, collecting data to support policy and investment development, and strengthening the capacity of government officials through practical training in research, mapping, and policy development.
Cultural Industry Center Cambodia’s first creative and artistic center will be established at the Royal University of Fine Arts, behind the National Museum in Phnom Penh, which will be a hub for artists and creative professionals by providing workspaces, studios, rehearsal rooms and other support in creating works, providing free advice on intellectual property, business registration, taxation, finance and market research, providing training courses on business management, business development, intellectual property management and income generation to help create networks, collaboration and co-creation between those in the cultural and creative sectors in Cambodia.
