Canadian PM welcomes expansion of LNG production capacity to double output for Asian markets

OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed a significant investment from the private sector as LNG Canada approved its Phase 2 expansion project.

The project will make the facility the second largest of its kind in the world and strengthen Canada’s trade ties with Asia.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, LNG Canada’s decision is based on the success of its Phase 1 project, which began exporting low-carbon liquefied natural gas (LNG) in June 2025, marking the first time LNG has been exported directly from Canada to customers.

LNG Canada’s Phase 2 project will double the terminal’s capacity to 28 million tonnes per year. The press release quoted Carney as saying: “The historic investment in LNG Canada is proof that Canada is building on big, ambitious projects again.

The facility will export some of the lowest-emission LNG to new markets in Asia. Canada is strengthening domestic capacity, developing new trading partners abroad, and driving unprecedented levels of new investment for its major projects.

That’s what an energy power does when it decides to act as an energy power. LNG Canada is a joint venture formed by Shell Canada, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation, and KOGAS.
