Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen has stated that regarding the issue of sending young people to serve in frontline activities, he is not creating new laws, but rather studying old laws.

Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen made the remarks on the occasion of presiding over the 140th anniversary of International Workers’ Day on May 1, 2026, and the 30th anniversary of Japan’s official development assistance for the Preah Sihanouk Autonomous Port (1996-2026) on May 1, 2026 in Preah Sihanouk Province.

The Prime Minister recalled that in the past, he had instructed the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Commissioner, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces to study the law, not create new laws. To send or take the arrested gang members to work on the front lines to help with border work, such as digging trenches or doing other work.

The Prime Minister continued that there is no need to create a new law, and there is no case of sending the accused on bail to serve in the military.

Prime Minister Hun Manet said, “There is no principle to make a new law, let’s study the old law. I wonder how many experts are so knowledgeable that they don’t understand. Ordinary people understand better.”

The Prime Minister added that sending gang members to the front lines does not mean that they are allowed to carry weapons. Just to do other activities that serve the military sector.
