Phnom Penh: A student who was driving a car at high speed while drunk and causing a traffic accident, hitting a motorcycle and a trailer from behind, causing the motorcycle driver to die instantly on the spot at midnight on May 1, 2026, has been charged to court.

The horrific incident occurred at 1:40 a.m. in front of Wat Veal Sbov along National Road 1 in Ta Ok Village, Veal Sbov Sangkat, Chbar Ampov District, Phnom Penh.

According to a report from the authorities, the accident was caused by a car: A white LEXUS NX350 with Cambodian license plate .VSP.2727, driven by Va Sopheak, male, 23 years old, student, native of Banteay Meanchey province (no driver’s license). The injured party was a red CITI PLUS motorcycle (no license plate) driven by a man (died on the spot).

Before the accident, the vehicle was traveling on National Road 1 in an east-west direction at high speed. When they arrived at the scene, they hit a motorcycle from behind with a trailer traveling in the same direction at full speed. The force of the collision pushed and dragged the motorcycle under the car, hitting three flagpoles at Wat Veal Sbov and one bus stop sign before the car could move forward.
Suddenly, the car caught fire, causing extensive damage to the front and completely burning the motorcycle. The Chbar Ampov District Fire Department intervened and sprayed water to save it.
According to the assessment of experts, the main reason was that the driver was driving at high speed and was drunk, with an alcohol level of 0.92 mg/liter of breath.
Currently, the driver of the car has been arrested by the Road Traffic Police Office of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Station and a case has been filed according to procedure. To be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for legal action.
