Phnom Penh: Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, has stated that the principles of the Military Conscription Law have provided important principles and many benefits for those fulfilling military service of all ages.
In his intervention at the extraordinary session of the 7th legislature on the agenda of the “Draft Law on Military Conscription” on May 12, 2026, the Prime Minister said that the implementation of the Military Conscription Law has provided important principles and many benefits. The benefits were highlighted by the King as the principle of compulsory service according to actual needs, which can be implemented voluntarily or forcedly according to actual conditions for citizens aged 18-25 years old, who will become reservists until the age of 45 after completing 24 months of military service.
The King said that another benefit is provided by the compulsory service principle for men and the voluntary service principle for women. In addition, the principle of regular training for reservists according to specific programs and specifications. For the principle of maintaining the original framework and positions in state institutions, public or private enterprises, citizens who have successfully completed their military service can return to serve in their original units in the same position and the principle of being ready to participate in missions when the country needs reservists.
The Prime Minister said that “by implementing these five principles, we can contribute to building our youth resources to be physically strong, disciplined, moral, professional, and willing to serve the national society and the homeland, whether in the military, public sector, or private civilian sector, because we have transformed youth resources into real capital, real people and valuable to the national society.”
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of implementing this law as a strategic policy that will require additional state budget spending, but will provide major benefits that are almost priceless. In addition, it provides direct benefits to the national defense sector by creating a clear system and mechanism that can build a strong, capable, highly professional, and effective national defense force that can respond adequately and timely to external threats.
