Phnom Penh: Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People’s Party, does not allow the formation of political parties from the 29-party alliance and asks to join the alliance.
At the press conference after the meeting, the Cambodian People’s Party Spokesperson, His Excellency Chea Thirith, emphasized that during the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen emphasized that he would absolutely not allow the formation of political parties from the 29-party alliance and join the alliance. However, Samdech Techo, the party leader, did not prohibit the creation of new political parties, saying that if anyone wants to create a new party, they should do so according to the law.
The spokesperson for the Cambodian People’s Party said, “The leader of the Cambodian People’s Party has stated that he does not support joining an alliance with an alliance party when forming a new party, but rather leaving the alliance party. But that does not mean that he is prohibited from forming a party. He can form a normal party according to the correct law and he does normal politics based on the election law, the party law, as usual.”
Samdech Techo’s announcement was supported by the other 28 parties in the alliance. Mr. Mam Sonando, the leader of the Sambong Social Democratic Party, expressed his position that this is the right thing to do for those who want to form another party and ask to join the 29-party alliance.
He stated, “I support 100%, avoid those who have the idea of forming a new party without breaking up… I know this member as my member.”
For Mr. Nhek Bun Chhay, the leader of the National Unity Party, it is not much different from Mr. Mam Sonando, who supports the announcement of the leader of the Cambodian People’s Party because this is good, avoid any conflict and go and form another party.
He claimed, “I really support His Majesty saying that he does not accept parties that ask to form a new party into the alliance, or that break away from the alliance.”
Please note that on the morning of May 20, 2026, as every year, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, head of the Cambodian People’s Party, presided over a meeting with the 29 party alliances after their establishment in 2023. The meeting lasted for a morning with good results, which was satisfactory for the coalition parties.
