Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the Funan Canal project, which is currently under construction, will bring great benefits to the national economy.
On the occasion of the inauguration of a rubber waste processing factory in Tbong Khmum district, Tbong Khmum province on the morning of May 27, 2026, the Prime Minister said that after the Funan Canal project is completed, the Royal Government will restore additional waterways to connect this canal to various provinces such as Kampong Chhnang or Kratie provinces to facilitate the transportation sector, especially agricultural products in Cambodia.

The Prime Minister said that the Funan Canal project will provide many benefits for the economy in the future by providing transportation, irrigation for the agricultural sector along the river for millions of hectares, the creation of special economic zones and additional industries.
The Prime Minister said that “it must be done for the benefit of the entire economy, helping the agricultural sector, the agro-industrial sector, especially our transportation sector, to ensure our competitiveness. This is the result that I dare to guarantee. There is no loss in building the Funan Canal. “It is only profitable.”
Please note that the Funan Techo Canal is Cambodia’s first historic waterway project, which officially opened its construction site on August 5, 2024, under the patronage of His Excellency Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and government leaders at all levels, as well as the participation of tens of thousands of citizens. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2028 with an investment of approximately $1.7 billion.

The Funan Techo Canal project, connecting Cambodia’s river-sea waterways, is nearly 180 kilometers long, with a width of 100 meters at the top and 80 meters at the bottom, a water depth of 5.4 meters, and two navigation lanes. This waterway starts from Prek Takeo of the Mekong River, passes through Prek Por of the Bassac River, then enters Prek Ta Hing and continues to the sea of ​​Kep province, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep city.
