Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen said that resolving the border issue takes time, based on basic legal methods, rather than sending soldiers to fight and die and never resolving it.

At the inauguration ceremony of the three-story building, achievements, and awarding basic teacher certificates and bachelor’s degrees in physical education to teachers and students of the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that resolving the issue of national defense and territory does not only use armed forces, but also uses all means.

The Prime Minister said, “Yesterday, we started using the UN CLOS international legal mechanism to resolve and protect Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial rights.” On the sea territory using UN CLOS, this forced reconciliation is the same. But it is better than sending soldiers to fight and die and not being able to resolve it.”

The King continued that as long as there is a peaceful resolution of national and territorial issues, and I believe that no solution using force will be sustainable unless it is used in accordance with the law.

Please note that on June 2, 2026, the Royal Government of Cambodia sent an official notification to the Thai side and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to initiate the process of the forced reconciliation mechanism under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to resolve overlapping maritime claims with Thailand.
