Germany commits to continue supporting environmental protection and improving the livelihoods of local communities

Phnom Penh: Germany, through GIZ and other partner organizations, has confirmed its commitment to supporting the Ministry of Environment to improve the livelihoods of local communities and conserve natural resources through waste management and green economy projects.

The German delegation, led by Mr. Christof Weigelmeier, Deputy Head of Mission and Cooperation, German Embassy in Cambodia, and Dr. Matthias Bickel, Country Director, GIZ, received permission to meet with Dr. Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, on June 4, 2026 at the Ministry of Environment.

Mr. Christof Weigelmeier confirmed Germany’s support, especially GIZ, for projects on waste management, urban solid waste, reduction and recycling of waste and plastic waste, and the Koh Sralao conservation project. in Koh Kong province, which focuses on improving the livelihoods of local communities and preserving biodiversity.

Germany has been collaborating with the Royal Government of Cambodia to implement activities focused on Cambodia’s third National Climate Change Contribution Plan, NDC 3.0, with the goal of helping to manage waste and plastic waste and improve the livelihoods of local communities to be climate resilient and prosperous.

On the occasion, Dr. Eang Sophallet said that Cambodia is ranked as the country with the best natural environment in the world, while the Ministry of Environment cooperates with relevant ministries, institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, and local communities to work together on environmental protection and natural resource management.

The Minister reminded that the Royal Government of Cambodia cares about the livelihoods of local communities because the conservation of natural resources It cannot succeed if people lack jobs and income. Improving livelihoods helps to cut off dependence on forest by-products, logging, or hunting to ensure sustainable development.
