The International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, adopted by the United Nations on June 10, 2024, is a significant historical event that reflects the shared understanding of the international community that dialogue, understanding and mutual respect among civilizations are fundamental for maintaining peace and sustainable development in the world. This day is born from the essence and spirit of the Global Civilization Initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 15, 2023.

Over the past two years, this International Day has shown that it is not just a commemorative day, but also a new era initiative that responds to the common aspirations of humanity in the world and is in line with the general trend of the international community. The philosophy has been deeply embedded in the international community’s outlook through the theme of the 3rd Global Sinology Forum in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, from June 2 to 4, 2026. Ji Bingxian, President of the China Association for International Understanding (CAFIU), highlighted at the opening ceremony that promoting dialogue among civilizations is an important and necessary means of building trust and mutual understanding for the best solution to the world facing conflicts, cultural divisions, discrimination and geopolitical competition.
Indeed, the “Global Civilization Initiative” attaches importance to respecting the diversity of civilizations, upholding the common values of humanity, preserving and innovating civilizations, and strengthening exchanges and mutual learning. This Chinese wisdom clearly states that different civilizations are not obstacles to development, but are driving forces for common progress. Therefore, dialogue instead of confrontation and learning from each other instead of rejection have become the core principles in solving global challenges, because the “Global Initiative of Civilizations” is a “joint initiative” of the ideas of: 1- Respecting the diversity of world civilizations, 2- Promoting the common values of humanity, 3- Paying attention to the continuity and innovation of civilizations, and 4- Strengthening cooperation and exchange of civilizational experiences globally.
In fact, in the two years of implementation of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, it has contributed to raising awareness that all civilizational achievements are the common wealth of humanity. Cultural exchanges, education, science, tourism, and people-to-people contacts are encouraged to be more active, which helps to increase understanding and reduce misunderstandings between nations and cultures. In addition, this International Day also highlights the important role of dialogue among civilizations in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, enhancing people’s well-being, and achieving common progress for humanity. As the world seeks solutions to global problems such as climate change, poverty, security crises, and unbalanced and unsustainable development, dialogue among civilizations can create the basis for understanding and cooperation necessary for addressing these issues, making China a center of peaceful dialogue and win-win cooperation.
Overall, the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, now in its second year of implementation, has demonstrated its value and significance in building a human community with a shared future. By promoting respect for the diversity of civilizations, equal dialogue, and mutual respect, the “Global Initiative for Civilizations” will continue to serve as an important platform for strengthening the solidarity of mankind and pushing the world toward peace, development, and common prosperity. In addition, the principles in the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations are clearly not only in line with the “Global Civilization Initiative” initiated by China, but also reflect the common aspiration of humanity to live together in harmony and mutual respect in the new era.
