Foreign Affairs: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, aiming to boost economic cooperation, especially in sectors such as shipbuilding.
According to Reuters on April 20, 2026, this is the first state visit by a South Korean president to India in eight years.
“The level of economic cooperation between South Korea and India is still very low,” Lee said on Sunday at a dinner meeting with members of the Korean community in New Delhi.
“From now on, we will expand that scope,” he said. “And make the relationship between South Korea and India completely different from what it is now.”
According to presidential advisor Wi Sung-lak, the two countries are looking to improve their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, with the aim of nearly doubling bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030 from $25.7 billion last year.
During his stay in India, Lee will also attend business events with corporate leaders. Wi said other areas where the countries could work together include finance, artificial intelligence and defense.
