Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment strengthens partnership with UN family in environmental protection cause

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Environment of Cambodia and UN Habitat signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on Natural Resources Management, Social Protection and Sustainable Development in Cambodia on the afternoon of April 30, 2026, at the Ministry of Environment, chaired by Dr. Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, and attended by leaders, officials of the Ministry of Environment, relevant ministries, institutions, and many partner organizations and development partners.

Ms. Kazuko ISHIGAKI, Regional Director of UN-Habitat for Asia and the Pacific, outlined several projects and action plans, including policy formulation and implementation, to respond to climate change in coastal areas and achieved proud successes.

On that occasion, Dr. Eang Sophallet said that this cooperation is a demonstration of support, participation and support for the Ministry of Environment in implementing its duties and responsibilities in managing natural resources and the environment and sustainable development so that Cambodia can achieve cleanliness, greenness and sustainability in line with the environmental sector cycle strategy, aiming to achieve increased forest cover and carbon-neutral development by 2050.

The Minister spoke about the efforts of Cambodia, a country that is highly affected by climate change, to participate in many activities in accordance with the plans and strategies of the Royal Government of Cambodia, including the Cambodian Climate Change Response Strategic Plan Phase 2 (CCCSP) 2024-2033, which integrates the government’s policies on adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction by encouraging the participation and implementation of work from various stakeholders.

At the same time, Cambodia has also submitted the third National Climate Change Contribution Plan (NDC:3.0), which sets a target of reducing greenhouse gases by 55% by 2035.
