Phnom Penh: On the morning of May 1, 2026, Mr. Heng Sour, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, invited to a meeting and solidarity dinner to celebrate the 140th anniversary of International Labor Day, May 1, 2026, which was organized at the headquarters of the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Cambodia (NCTU).

In his remarks to the ceremony, the Minister highlighted two new directions for Cambodia’s industrial sector, expressing optimism that Cambodia will have its own domestic fabric factories, which will help reduce imports. This development will make the textile, garment, footwear, and travel and handbag sectors more resilient and more productive. He stressed that by 2027, when Cambodia has its own textile factories, it will become a strong defense hub with a production capacity of more than 40%, which is a key factor in maintaining duty-free exports to major markets such as the United States and the European Union, etc.

While recalling the long history of International Labor Day, Mr. Heng Sour Explained the meaning of the theme for 2026: “Building Resilience Together for Decent Work.” This theme reflects the Royal Government’s strong commitment to promoting sustainable labor market development by continuing to improve working conditions, guaranteeing the freedom of professional organizations, strengthening the social protection system, and promoting deeper social dialogue in all aspects.

On that occasion, the Minister also brought the valuable words of Samdech Maha Vajiralongkorn, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on April 26, defined “decent work” as work that focuses on well-being, has good working conditions, and provides high wages for workers.

At the same time, the Minister gave recommendations and encouragement to all relevant parties. To continue to uphold the spirit of International Labor Day, May 1, by reminding that May 1 is a day of remembrance, but in practice it is a daily obligation that employers, labor inspectors, workers, and unions must continue to cooperate in consistently implementing working conditions for the common good and as a driving force in promoting national economic growth.
