Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen has asked some people not to see the implementation of the military conscription law as a waste of time.
On the occasion of presiding over the celebration of the 19th anniversary of Cambodian Veterans and Retirees Day on the morning of May 15, 2026, the Prime Minister said thatthe military conscription law provides important principles and many benefits for citizens of all ages to fulfill their military duties. So do not think that this law is a burden for everyone of all ages.
The Prime Minister stated, “I do not want people to see the implementation of the conscription law as a waste of time and education. It should be an opportunity for us to give back to our poor Cambodia.”
The Prime Minister explained that in the future, the conscription law will be expanded. This means that those who are on active duty have no qualifications. According to the initial thinking, only after two years when they retire will they have any qualifications and you can apply to become a professional soldier. Professional soldiers have been in service until they retire and become reservists.
The King stated that the reservists will create a reserve unit. This reserve unit, in addition to the full-time professional unit, is a reserve unit. Reservists and conscripts must perform their duties for one or two weeks per year.
Please note that this draft law, which consists of 8 chapters and 20 articles, was approved by the National Assembly on May 12, 2026. It was prepared with the aim of implementing the new Article 49 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia, which sets out the rules for implementing military service to contribute to building the nation and defending the homeland, which is a necessary and honorable duty of Cambodian citizens.
