Phnom Penh: Acting Head of State of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, said that if Cambodia does not reform the financial sector, tax collection will not increase to 240 million baht per month.
Speaking from the headquarters of the General Department of Taxation on June 2, 2026, during an invitation to visit and inspect, Samdech Techo said that if Cambodia does not reform public finances, tax collection, both taxes and customs duties, will not increase as much as it does today.
Samdech Techo emphasized that “If we do not reform, our tax revenue may remain the same. In the past, if we only talk about customs, we only see 20 million or 30 million baht per month, which is great, but now, only 240 or 230 is less. It is as low as 250 million and above that is high.”
Samdech Techo said that in the first five months of 2026, tax revenue was collected at around 53%, amounting to around 200 billion baht, which, together with customs duties, increased to 3500 million baht.
Regarding Cambodia’s financial sector, Samdech Techo told the opposition, who are constantly criticizing the Cambodian leadership, that just because Cambodia decided to print more new money, it means that Cambodia does not have enough funds to meet the needs. On this point, Samdech Techo said to the illegal rebels that Cambodia has enough funds to meet the needs without shortages.
