Phnom Penh: Spokesperson of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Mr. Pen Bona, said that the Royal Government and the leadership of Cambodia have been making great efforts and actively working to protect the territorial integrity of both the land and maritime borders.

In a statement on the Cambodia-Thailand border situation on June 2, 2026, Mr. Pen Bona said that the efforts of the Royal Government and the leadership of Cambodia to protect this territory are made through peaceful diplomatic means and based on international law to find a real and lasting solution and maintain peace.

He said, “The spokesperson of the Royal Government would like to reiterate to our compatriots the following peaceful and international law-based position of Cambodia: Position on resolving the maritime border: Since the Thai cabinet decided to unilaterally cancel the Memorandum of Understanding between Cambodia and Thailand Or MoU 2001, on May 5, 2026, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced that Cambodia had no choice but to decide to use the forced mediation mechanism under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) because the Thai side had canceled the bilateral mechanism that had been maintained for 25 years.

The spokesperson added that this forced mediation mechanism was also established to assist the parties to resolve disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law, which is in line with Cambodia’s peaceful position and based on international law.

According to Mr. Pen Bona, this position has been officially notified by the Cambodian side to the Thai side and was also confirmed by the King and Prime Minister to the Thai Prime Minister during the trilateral meeting in Cebu, Philippines on May 7, 2026. In addition, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reiterated this to his Thai counterpart in a meeting on May 26, 2026 in New York.
