Committee 8 to increase prevention of “non-communicable diseases” as hidden killers silently killing citizens

Phnom Penh: The 8th Committee of the National Assembly and the Women’s Parliamentary Group have urged the Kampong Speu Provincial Referral Hospital to increase awareness of preventing “non-communicable diseases,” a hidden killer that is silently killing citizens at an alarming rate.

This promotion was made on the occasion of the National Assembly delegation’s visit to inspect the progress of work and the provision of health services to the people at Kampong Speu Provincial Referral Hospital on June 11, 2026.

Chairperson of the 8th Committee of the National Assembly, Ms. Lok Kheng, highlighted that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) Such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease are chronic diseases that have killed many citizens silently (in fact, in 2016, there was an average of 164 deaths per day and it continues to increase).

To prevent this problem, she advised all hospitals and health centers to increase direct education, the “3 Less” campaign «Less fat, less salt and less sugar», strengthening community networks.

According to the report of the director of Kampong Speu Provincial Referral Hospital, in response to non-communicable diseases, the hospital has installed educational video viewing stations and equipped with modern diagnostic equipment such as MRI scanners and ECG machines. To ensure effective treatment, while the current bed occupancy rate is over 113.38% and the patient mortality rate is only 0.38%.
