Arts, culture and human capital: Cambodia opens doors to share experiences with Chinese counterparts

Phnom Penh: On the morning of May 30, 2026, Mr. Xu Yunguo, Party Secretary of Laiwu Vocational and Technical Training School of Shandong Province, China, led a delegation to visit the National School of Fine Arts to learn about cultural skills training, preservation of ancient arts, and development of cultural human resources in Cambodia.

On that occasion, Mr. Heng Thamkham, Director of the National School of Fine Arts, informed the delegation about the status of training students in various fields of art and culture, which is not only a transfer of knowledge, but also a foundation for preserving national cultural identity and continuing the Khmer artistic heritage to the next generation of young people. He also stated that many students after graduating from the National School of Fine Arts continued their studies at the Royal University of Fine Arts to develop their skills to a higher level and participate in serving the national cultural sector.

This presentation is in response to the remarks of Mr. San Phalla, Vice Rector, representing His Excellency the Rector of the Royal University of Fine Arts, who mentioned the university’s five key skills in a discussion with Mr. Xu Yunguo on the afternoon of May 29, 2026. These skills reflect the university’s role in producing human resources with expertise in art, culture, architecture, archaeology, and heritage conservation, which are essential for the development of Cambodia’s cultural sector.

During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor also led the delegation to view the artwork and research work of students, which demonstrated their abilities The creativity and hard work of Cambodian youth in contributing to preserving national culture. At the same time, he also revealed that human capital trained from the Royal University of Fine Arts is playing an active role in supporting the National Museum’s mission, especially in the conservation, restoration and maintenance of ancient artifacts that are valuable national heritage.

This highlight is also in line with Ms. Chap Sotheara, Deputy Director of the National Museum Department, represented the Director of the National Museum Department, who presented the activities of the five workshops of the National Museum, which are carrying out the work of repairing, maintaining, and conserving artifacts obtained from various sources. These tasks require both knowledge, skills, techniques and a high level of care to ensure that Cambodia’s cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

A delegation from Lay Ou Vocational and Technical Training School also visited the National Museum on the afternoon of May 29, 2026, which was an opportunity for experience exchange. and understanding of cultural preservation between Cambodia and China.

Through presentations, sharing experiences and information from the National School of Fine Arts, the Royal University of Fine Arts, the National Museum and the Apsara Authority, Cambodia’s attention to building cultural human resources and preserving national heritage in a sustainable manner was clearly demonstrated. These activities are also a demonstration of the continued strengthening of cultural and educational cooperation between Cambodia and China.

In particular, these activities and discussions have received full support from Her Excellency Dr. Phoeung Sakona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts. Through a discussion between the Lay Ou Vocational and Technical Training School and His Excellency Hap Touch, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts on the morning of May 29, 2026, both sides expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation on human resource development, skills training, and cultural preservation, which will contribute to promoting friendly relations and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
