Phnom Penh: Cambodia has become the first country in the Asia and Pacific region to achieve the historic achievement of the global HIV target of 95-95-95.
According to a joint press release between the Ministry of Health, the National AIDS Control Authority and UNAIDS on June 12, 2026, Cambodia’s achievement comes at a crucial time for the global HIV response as countries prepare for the 2026 High-Level Meeting on HIV, which will be held on June 22-23, 2026 in New York, USA. What is happening in Cambodia shows that progress can happen when there is a convergence of political commitment, reliable financing, innovation, effective services and community leadership.
Eamonn Murphy, UNAIDS Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said the achievement shows that anything is possible when implementation is people-centered.
Ieng Mouli, Senior Minister and Chairman of the National AIDS Authority, said the achievement was a matter of national pride but also a responsibility. His Excellency added that Cambodia’s task is to ensure that growth is protected and sustainable by increasing national ownership through greater domestic investment in the national response to HIV.
To achieve the goal, Professor Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, congratulated and praised this remarkable achievement as a historic milestone in the HIV response in Cambodia. He emphasized that, however, Cambodia’s mission remains to continue and to preserve this achievement forever.
Please note that the 95-95-95 target means that 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status, 95% of those who know they are HIV-positive receive antiretroviral treatment, and 95% of those on antiretroviral treatment achieve HIV suppression.
