Foreign Affairs: Thailand will take the trade dispute over Malaysia’s suspension of five types of Thai shrimp to the World Trade Organization and ASEAN while pursuing broader measures to limit the economic impact, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun said on Saturday.

‎According to The Nation on June 7, 2026, the issue marks a shift from short-term domestic market support to a broader trade response aimed at protecting Thai seafood exporters and producers.

‎Ms. Suphajee said the government is moving on several fronts to limit the economic impact of Malaysia’s measures, which came into effect on June 1, while seeking both short-term market channels and long-term trade solutions.

‎The response shows that Bangkok is viewing the shrimp ban not only as a domestic supply management issue but also a bilateral trade issue that could affect confidence in Thailand’s seafood export supply chain.

‎Ms. Suphajee said Thailand is ready to raise the issue through relevant international mechanisms, including the WTO and ASEAN, while continuing efforts to negotiate a practical solution with Malaysia.
