Kratie: A male deer weighing about 40 kilograms escaped from a wetland and grassland sanctuary behind a villager’s house in Kbal Chou village, Sambok commune, Chet Borei district, Kratie province on May 19, 2026.
The male deer was chased by a local dog and tried to escape by running up the national road into a nearby villager’s house. The animal eventually ran and got caught in the wire fence of the local house. The villagers then notified the park rangers of the Kratie Provincial Department of Environment and WWF, in collaboration with local authorities, to capture the deer and bring it to a safe place for rescue.

The team examined the male deer and found that it had wounds on its body, which could have been caused by the escape in the above incident. The team rescued the animal and contacted Cambodia Wildlife Care (CWC) to transport the male deer to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Phnom Penh for further treatment. After recovery, the male deer will be released back into its natural habitat.
Please note that the deer is on the IUCN Red List, the most endangered species in the world, and in Cambodia, according to previous studies, there are only about 100 of them living in the Prek Prasap Wildlife Sanctuary in Kratie Province and in several other protected areas in Koh Kong Province.
