Phnom Penh: Dr. Yang Pov, a political expert, stated that Prime Minister Anutin Chanvirakul, who is currently leading Thailand, is leading the country into populist politics for the benefit of his party.
The statement by the geopolitics expert of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, Dr. Yang Pov, came at a time when on April 23, 2026, the Thai Security Council announced its unilateral withdrawal from the 2001 Cambodia-Thailand Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU 2001. Then on May 5, 2026, the Thai Cabinet officially approved the decision to terminate MOU 2001. Immediately after the approval, Anutin Chanvirakul also announced that this cancellation has nothing to do with border issues, nothing to do with international affairs, but is the politics of the Phum Chai Thai Party.
Dr. Yang Pov told the Ampil Information Center on May 7 that Anutin Chanvirakul has caused Thailand to lose trust from the international community on various forums in various countries around the world.
The doctor emphasized that “Anutin Chanvirakul has led Thailand to descend into its own nationalist, populist politics, reducing its capital power because it has canceled the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding, which is already an international law, an international agreement. This has made this country, internationally and other countries They have lost faith in their international obligations.”
The political expert emphasized that the 2001 MoU is the legacy of the state because since the signing of the MoU together, it has been 26 years, having passed through 9 prime ministers, including Anutin himself.
Dr. Yang Pov claims that over the past 25 years, the sea between Cambodia and Thailand has been calm, secure, and free of armed conflicts. On the other hand, Anutin claims that the 2001 MoU has no benefits, but in reality, Anutin made it to serve the interests of pure nationalist politics and destroyed Thailand and Thai civilized society on his own in international forums.
